Worse than a monkey

Dirty Harry hits the nail-
An abstract panting can be appealing to the eye and look good on a wall. My contempt doesn’t rise from the painting itself but rather from the idea that the painter is somehow more talented than a pre-schooler or an adult monkey.

I think he is being charitable.

Excellent thought on the subject. I'd personally like to do a more in depth study of how to appreciate abstract art.

Well I don't really agree with that. There is a lot of figurative work out there that is not so good. The same goes for abstract work. And just like good figurative work, good abstract work takes skill ( a different sort of skill / an intuition for the elements of drawing and painting without the concern of representation, but rather how they can affect you as form) and is as rare.
